The Coosa community sits right on the Georgia/Alabama line and is part of Rome and Floyd County. Coosa is one of the oldest communities in the Rome area and is named after the Coosa River that winds through the area to Alabama. It was once a major transportation route for riverboats carrying both people and cargo (such as cotton) to the gins located in the larger towns of Rome and Gadsden, Alabama.
The Coosa community is an outdoorsmen’s paradise, with large areas to explore. In addition to the abundant hunting and fishing in the community, Simms Mountain Trail is a beautiful trail open to the public suitable for bicycling and hiking.
The Coosa River was the inspiration for Popeye the Sailorman cartoons. Popeye was inspired by Tom Sims, a resident of Rome, Georgia, who was familiar with riverboat life on the Coosa River.
There is a softball complex in the Coosa area that includes several fields, a park, tennis, and picnic areas. There is also a community park with a gym where youth play basketball games.
Coosa also lies next to the Armuchee Community and has quick access to The Rocky Mountain Project Beach and Campground, where you will find trails, archery, fishing, camping, a beach area for swimming and playing.
Coosa is a short distance to Brushy Branch Campground, where you can enjoy lake life and fishing, or you can visit the Lock and Dam Park, where you can go camping, fish, and boat on the Coosa River.
Coosa is a close-knit, largely rural community outside the hustle and bustle of Rome and is the crossroads of several small communities that are just as unique as Coosa.
